Diabetes Prevention Program commemorates 20 years of landmark research
Several people with leadership roles in the NIH-funded Diabetes Prevention Program and its Outcomes Study take a moment to reflect on the study’s 20th anniversary while at the American Diabetes Association’s annual Scientific Sessions in June in San Francisco. The occasion was commemorated with a widely attended symposium at the ADA, where researchers presented the most recent results of the study.

NIDDK takes part in country’s largest STEM Festival
NIDDK staff help children "Be a Sugar Detective" at the USA Science and Engineering Festival, held in Washington, D.C., April 24-27. As part of NIDDK's activity, hundreds of children tested their knowledge of how much sugar is in foods and drinks, often coming away saying they will make healthier, lower-sugar choices.

NIH-supported Type 1 Diabetes Research
More than 20 members of bipartisan Congressional staffs (pictured here with NIDDK staff, researchers and grantees) came to NIH on Nov. 15, 2013, to learn about NIH-supported type 1 diabetes research, as well as about the benefits of investment in NIH.

National Kidney Foundation's Outstanding Achievement Award
NIDDK Director Griffin P. Rodgers accepts the National Kidney Foundation's Outstanding Achievement Award from WJLA-TV news anchor Jummy Olabanji at a November 2013 ceremony in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes Rodgers’ commitment to bettering the lives of patients through research and by increasing awareness, prevention and treatment of kidney disease through the National Kidney Disease Education Program and his “Healthy Moments” radio show.

2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
In October, NIDDK grantee Dr. James Rothman received the 2013 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine, shared with fellow NIH grantees Drs. Randy W. Schekman and Thomas C. Südhof “for their discoveries of machinery regulating vesicle traffic, a major transport system in our cells,” according to the Nobel organization.

Diabetes Research: Reducing the Burden of Diabetes at All Ages and Stages
On July 10, 2013, NIDDK Director Dr. Griffin P. Rodgers (center, speaking) testified about progress in type 1 diabetes research before the Senate Special Committee on Aging, which is led by Chairman Bill Nelson (D-FL) and Ranking Member Susan Collins (R-ME). The hearing, entitled “Diabetes Research: Reducing the Burden of Diabetes at All Ages and Stages,” was held in conjunction with the Children’s Congress, an event sponsored by the JDRF (formerly called the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).
