COPD awareness – 1

Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters, I’m Joe Balintfy. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD is a serious health condition where the lungs become partially blocked. It is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. and Dr. James Kiley at the NIH says about 12 million Americans have it.

Kiley: Maybe what’s even more telling than that number is that there may be as many as 12 million more people in this country that have COPD and don’t even know it.

Narrator: For details on the signs, symptoms and treatment options for COPD, as well as information from the Learn More, Breath Better awareness campaign, visit www.nhlbi.nih.gov. Health Matters is produced by the National Institutes of Health, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
