Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. Managing chronic pain is a challenge. Dr. Nora Volkow an institute director at the NIH says finding the balance between prescribing an opioid medication and the potential risks with those painkillers is a complicated question for doctors.
Volkow: These answers will come on a personalized basis because each patient is different but it does highlight the responsibility that both the physician and the patient have to maintain a dialogue that will allow them to be able to optimize the beneficial effects of these really remarkable medications when used as needed.
