Understanding the metabolism – 5

Narrator:  This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. Metabolism is the process your body uses to get or make energy from the food you eat.

Chen: There is some connection between metabolism and obesity, but the direction of that is not what typically people understand.

Narrator:  Dr. Kong Chen is an investigator at the NIH.

Chen: So a classic misunderstanding or myth if you will is that people who are obese have lower metabolism.

Narrator: In fact, bigger people have a higher metabolism. Dr. Chen adds, research is looking into why, but so far it appears that the higher metabolism is a result of weight gain or obesity. For details on this research, visit www.niddk.nih.gov. Health Matters is produced by the NIH, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
