Food insufficiency linked to frailty – 5
Narrator: This is NIH Health Matters. I’m Joe Balintfy. While researchers have found a link between not getting enough food and being frail, they also noticed a surprising finding in a study of older adults.
Smit: What this study found is that in fact a frail person may look underweight but they may also look obese.
Narrator: Dr. Ellen Smit at Oregon State University explains that a frail person experiences muscle weakness, exhaustion or can only manage low physical activity. She says it is important for frail older adults to improve nutrition without increasing body weight. To learn more about health and medical research for older adults, visit www.nia.nih.gov. Health Matters is produced by the NIH, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
